UPVC doors are everywhere across Ellesmere Port, Chester, the Wirral and into Deeside — and for good reason. They’re durable, energy efficient and generally low maintenance. But “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance,” and over time, even well-made UPVC doors develop problems.

 

The good news is that most of the common issues aren’t as serious as they look, and they certainly don’t mean you need a brand new door. As a local locksmith who deals with UPVC repairs across this whole area on a daily basis, here are the problems I come across most often — and what can be done about them.

 

1. The Door Handle Drops When You Try to Lock the Door

 

This is one of the most common call-outs I get. You lift the handle to engage the locking points, and it either won’t stay up or drops back down before you can turn the key. This is a risk to your home, as it will prevent you from securing your property.

 

 

What’s happening: The internal gearbox inside the handle mechanism has worn out. Nothing major. This is a wear-and-tear issue that happens on any UPVC door over time, and it’s particularly common on doors that get heavy daily use. So if you have family members working different shifts, teenagers in and out of the house, it will happen sooner rather than later. 

 

The fix: Replacing the gearbox or the full handle mechanism. Painless and fast.  I carry a wide range of these on the van and can usually complete the repair in a single visit. This is a much cheaper job than most people expect.

 

2. The Door Sticks or Is Hard to Close

If you’re having to shoulder the door closed, lift it slightly, or give it a firm shove, the door has dropped out of alignment. Nothing big again. The misalignment puts extra stress on the locking points and the frame, and over time can damage the mechanism itself. It can then turn into a much bigger job.

 

What’s happening: The hinges have settled or worn, and the door is no longer sitting square in the frame.

 

The fix: Hinge adjustment. Modern UPVC hinges are fully adjustable in multiple directions, and realigning a dropped door typically takes 15–30 minutes. I regularly carry out this work across Chester, Ellesmere Port and the Wirral. And it makes an immediate difference.

 

3. The Key Turns But the Door Won’t Lock (or Won’t Open)

This one is more serious, especially when it happens at night or you’re in a hurry. You turn the key, you can feel it doing something, but the door isn’t locked. Maybe worse; it’s locked and you can’t get it to open.

 

 

What’s happening: The multipoint locking mechanism inside the door has failed. These mechanisms are made up of a series of hooks, rollers and deadbolts that engage into the frame when you lift the handle and turn the key. When the mechanism fails, those points stop engaging properly. so the lock stops working. 

 

The fix: Mechanism replacement. I carry a selection of replacement multipoint mechanisms (also called gearboxes or locking strips) to cover the most common door brands and sizes of uPVC doors. In most cases I can replace the mechanism and have your door working correctly within an hour or so.

 

4. Draughts Around the Door

If you can feel cold air coming in around the edges of your UPVC door even when it’s closed, the seal is failing or the door has dropped enough that it’s no longer pressing properly against the frame. Not only will you be cold, but also pay more on your heating bill, so best get it sorted.

 

What’s happening: It’s usually a combination of a worn or compressed door seal and a minor alignment issue.

 

The fix: Hinge adjustment to restore the proper fit, combined with seal replacement, if it is needed. Bear in mind that this is a comfort issue but can also affect your energy bills. A well-fitting UPVC door should be effectively airtight when closed.

 

5. UPVC Window Handle Problems

It’s not just doors. UPVC window handles across Ellesmere Port and Chester are often original to the property and can be 15–20 years old. If the handle feels loose, won’t stay in the locked position, or has visibly worn, it should be replaced. A window that appears locked but isn’t is a real security issue that can invalidate your insurance should anything happen.

 

When Should You Call a Locksmith vs. a Joiner?

For anything to do with the locks, handles, mechanisms, hinges or security of a UPVC door, a locksmith is the right call. Joiners are great for frame damage and cosmetic work, but the internal locking systems are firmly in locksmith territory.
